Troubleshooting Your Faulty Sub-Zero Fridge

Undoubtedly, the refrigerator is one of the most essential appliances in your kitchen. For many years Sub Zero produces highly reliable home appliances, which makes our lives much easier. It is very important to keep your appliance in an appropriate condition. Otherwise, your kitchen routine can suffer quite a lot. There could be numerous issues preventing your refrigerator from working properly. Let’s find out how to fix the most common ones. Keep in mind, that if you have some difficulties during the repair, we highly recommend calling a professional for this work.

Make sure to unplug your fridge before attempting any service!

Sub-Zero refrigerator is not cooling

A quite common problem among our customers is inappropriate cooling. You can tell your appliance is not cooling properly by checking the temperature inside the refrigerator compartment. According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the appropriate temperature should be about 32°F. Also, consider checking your freezer temperature, which should not be above 1.4°F. Whether you noticed leakage under your fridge or whether it consumes more energy than usual you might be experiencing temperature issues.

So, what parts of the Sub-Zero fridge can cause such a problem?

Condenser coils

The first thing worth checking is condenser coils. Usually, they located under the fridge. The main function of coils is to dissipate heat, so it is easier for the fridge to cool down. If you find them dirty, you can fix it on your own. To clean the faulty part, simply unscrew it and clean the dust and debris using a vacuum cleaner. Also, you can buy a cleaning brush and foam to perform a more efficient job. Preferably, condenser coils need to be cleaned twice a year.

Evaporator fan motor

The evaporator fan circulates cold air throughout the freezer and refrigerator compartment. If the fan motor is at fault, it would prevent your fridge from maintaining the appropriate temperature. To fix this problem you need to replace the fan motor. Firstly, find the location of the evaporator fan assembly. For the most Sub-Zero models, it is located in the freezer compartment. To access and replace the assembly, the freezer air duct and evaporator cover will need to be removed. Then disconnect the fan motor wiring, tilt the assembly forward and pull the motor out.

Start relay

The main function of the start relay is to start the compressor. When the start relay wiring is at fault, the compressor might not run. You may determine whether there is a problem, performing a continuity test. First, using the user manual, find the compressor (typically located at the back bottom of the fridge). Get access to the start relay and check its continuity with a multimeter. If you found damaged sockets or wires, get professional assistance for your appliance.
